About this course

A career in crawler crane operating is financially rewarding but there are high risks associated with the role. It requires great training to ensure candidates have the appropriate knowledge to operate a crawler crane whilst before they start work on site.

As we are a crawler crane hire company, we know what is required from operators whilst working on site. So we provide our training candidates with the necessary skills and training to have a successful career as a crane operator.

Course Aims

The course aims to provide high quality training and testing in the safe and effective use of plant and machinery to enable the candidate to attain the CPCS Red Operator Card.

This course is for anyone who requires training in operating Crawler Crane and is suitable for those students who have received no formal instruction.
If you wish to refresh your skills, we offer a short duration course. (Please call for details regarding shorter courses).

Entry Requirements

  1. CITB Health, safety and environment test passed within two years before the course start date or CPCS test date.
  2. Students should possess a good understanding of spoken and written English. Please don’t hesitate to contact us, if you have any concerns in this area.

Teaching and Assessment

  1. Six (6) Days Training – Classroom-based and Practical Training
  2. Mock tests done throughout the week to ensure successful outcome from the course
  3. One (1) Day – CPCS Testing Theory and Practical

Course Content

Students who complete the course will be able to:

  1. Name and explain the function of the principle components, basic construction, controls and terminology associated with the operation of a crawler crane
  2. Conform with manufacturers requirements as per the operators handbook, other information sources and relevant regulations and legislation
  3. Undertake all pre-use checks
  4. Configure and ready a crawler crane for travel
  5. Travel the crawler crane to an area of work
  6. Manoeuvre a crawler crane in confined spaces
  7. Configure a crawler crane for lifting duties
  8. Explain rigging and de-rigging procedures when fitting a lattice-type extension
  9. Explain the actions required when being exposed to hazards, underground and overhead services before, during and after a lift • Programme/set-up rated capacity indicators (RCI’s) for lifting duties
  10. Lift various loads using the full radius and slewing capabilities of a crawler crane
  11. Accurately place loads, minimise the swinging of loads
  12. Change falls of rope on a hook block
  13. Move loads through machine travel and comply with signals and instructions
  14. Maintain safe working situations
  15. Prepare the crawler crane in preparation of movement from lifting duties
  16. Carry out shut down and securing procedures
  17. Explain loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting
  18. Know how to identify and counter Jib deflection
  19. Identify different types of crawler cranes

Outcome

On successful completion of the Theory & Practical tests the candidate is awarded the Red Trained Operators Card, which is valid for two (2) years. This can be upgraded to the Blue card, which is further valid for five (5) years.
