About this course

When it comes to making sure a lift is safe and goes according to plan, there is no doubt that the Slinger Signaller is one of the most important roles on site. Being a Slinger/Signaller requires good training to ensure you understand and perform your role competently.

Slinger/Signallers sling the loads using lifting accessories and give clear directions to the crane operator as to where the load should be lifted to.

A Slinger/Signaller’s main responsibility is to ensure the safety of the crane operator and any other construction worker or site visitor that could be at risk during the lift.

A40A – All Types – all duties
A40B – All Types – static duties
A40C – Knuckle boom static only
A40D – Excavator only
A40E – Lift truck only

Course Aims

Hawks course aims to provide high quality training and testing in the safe and effective use of lifting loads with lifting accessories to enable the candidate to attain Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) Slinger/Signaller Red Operator Card.

This course is suitable for anyone who requires training in Slinger/Signalling, including those who have received no prior training or experience in the role.

The A40 Slinger/Signaller course is an ideal entry point into the lifting industry.

Entry Requirements

  1. Students on the A40 Slinger/Signaller course must have passed the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Health, Safety & Environment Operatives touch screen test within two years of the course start date, or CPCS test date.
  2. Students should possess a good understanding of spoken and written English. Please don’t hesitate to contact us, if you have any concerns in this area.

Teaching and Assessment

  1. Three (3) Days Training – this includes classroom-based teaching and practical training
  2. Mock tests are taken throughout the week to ensure a successful outcome to the course
  3. One (1) Day – CPCS Testing Theory & Practical

Course Content

Students who complete the A40 Slinger/Signaller course will be able to:

  1. Know how to establish the weight and dimensions of a load and communicate this information to the crane operator
  2. Know how to use clear and unambiguous signals to direct the actions of a crane while it is being used to move loads of various weights and dimensions
  3. Know how to describe the nature of the lifting sector and the Slinger/Signaller’s role and responsibilities as a plant operator
  4. Be able to name and explain the purpose of differing types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories, basic construction, uses and applications, characteristics and terminology
  5. Know how to conform with the crane manufacturer’s requirements as per technical data, as well as other types of information sources and relevant regulations and legislation
  6. Interpret and extract information from all relevant documentation
  7. Undertake all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify non-serviceable items
  8. Determine the serviceability of lifting accessories, and maintain and store them correctly
  9. Explain the procedures required to place non-serviceable items out-of-service
  10. Identify the center of gravity of loads and it affects the load when lifted.
  11. Secure various types of load to a lifting hook using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures
  12. Direct and guide the movement of loads to different types of locations on site
  13. Accurately place loads on site
  14. Arrange, use and comply with all communication procedures
  15. Maintain safe working situations
  16. Carry out all out-of-service and securing procedures
