About this course

The Novice/Foundation A62 Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) Lifting Operations – Crane Supervisor course is designed for candidates who already have some site lifting experience as a Slinger/Signaller, or have been in a role of responsibility associated with the lifting of loads.

The course is a comprehensive training course designed to give delegates the knowledge to be able to pass their CPCS A62 tests. A good level of communication and reading and writing in English is required, while an understanding of mathematics is essential.

Course Aims

The Novice/Foundation A62 CPCS Lifting Operations / Crane Supervisor course provides high quality training and testing and is targeted for supervisors and managers with responsibility for lifting operations.

The course will enable candidates to undertake the duties of a Crane Supervisor as defined by the Appointed Person.

Candidates will learn how to comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Codes of Practice and industrial requirements.

On successful completion of the CPCS Technical tests students will receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

Entry Requirements

  1. The Novice/Foundation A62 CPCS Lift/Crane Supervisor course is suitable for supervisors and managers with responsibility for supervising lifting operations.  Candidates should have enough experience of cranes to meet the requirements specified in the British Standard 7121 Safe Use of Cranes.
  2. Crane supervisor is a critical role on site, so only those deemed suitable will be selected
  3. Candidates wishing to take the course will be asked to complete a self-profiling form to help them determine their level of lifting knowledge.
  4. Candidates wishing to apply for the course must have passed a Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Health, Safety & Environment test for supervisors within the last two (2) years.
  5. Candidates should possess a good understanding of spoken and written English. Please don’t hesitate to contact us, if you have any concerns in this area.

Teaching and Assessment

  1. Three (3) Days Training – Classroom-based and Practical Training
  2. Mock tests during the training
  3. One (1) Day – CPCS Testing

Course Content

Students who complete the course will be able to:

  1. Explain the duties and responsibilities of an Appointed Person, a Crane Supervisor, a Crane Operator, a Slinger/Signaller, a Crane Erector, and maintenance personnel
  2. State the basic requirements of legislation, regulations, and codes of practice that relate to all types of lifting duties
  3. Explain additional requirements for loads to be lifted from height
  4. Explain maintenance, inspections, thorough examination and testing requirements for lifting equipment and accessories
  5. State requirements that allow safe site access and egress for typical lifting equipment
  6. Describe setting up, erection, levelling and dismantling requirements for different types of lifting equipment and lifts • Explain the function and use off, and use information provided by RCIs and anti-collision systems
  7. List different types of lifting accessories and explain typical applications
  8. Identify and explain relevant information relating to different types of lifting accessories including, for example, markings, certificates and thorough examination reports, etc.
  9. Verify sling sizes and angles
  10. Explain slinging techniques for given loads, including, for example, balanced, unbalanced and loose
  11. Verify appropriate lifting accessories for given types of loads in accordance with a given method statement
  12. Confirm weights and centres of gravity for different types of loads in accordance with a given method statement
  13. Describe and demonstrate different types of communication methods for lifting purposes
  14. Communicate the lift plan information to others involved in a lifting operation
  15. Report and explain positive and negative aspects of a typical lift foll
